Finally compiling a list of my fics, because I am at a point where I feel one is necessary.

I'm taking a break from the internet for a while to spend more time with fiance while he has free time over spring break, and to get my real life back in order a bit. If you need to contact me for some reason, I'll still be checking email at jiang1ling2@gmail.com. Otherwise, see you whenever I get back.

Not that anybody actually reads this journal, but hey. Any interest?

A Final Fantasy VII RPG

Twice, our world was stricken by the end. The plains and once wet fields are nothing but ashes, torn asunder by the was, the then, the past - two pasts - that laid their marks.

Our planet was fated to die twice over, and though there were many that shed their blood for this good earth when their time came for them, the Gaian race is far from extinction. We wonder how it is that our place in this known universe avoided destruction, of Meteor and Omega, but as all beings who are face to face with the ultimate question of reality, we come to understand that we know nothing. We've set our eyes on re-birth; these were not uncharted waters. We looked to the heavens for Alexander, for Eden, for law and religion, and we saw the pale drifts of Lifestream scattered across the stars. Our world as we know it is a war of the world's making. A war waged upon us, and itself, the galaxies and beyond willing a conquest by extermination of all that is good to us, and all that remains. Others have fought for us. We looked on to our saviors for help. Where once stood Shinra, our lord and protector, now stands bricks in broken asphalt. Where once stood Midgar, the empire, now stands Midgar, the ruins. Shinra, Avalanche, World Regenesis, Deepground. There's only so far we can go with self-conflict and single-manned goals.

The colonization of this planet alone won't help our cause. The clusters of our people still exist, the grounds of the past are crumbled, and one by one, we attempt to pick up the pieces, to an avail we hope still lives.

This isn't the end. At least, not yet. But can we learn, or will we ever learn?

The Railing [FFVII]

Title: The Railing
Characters: Rufus
Rating: T
Warnings: Morbid themes
Word count: 692
Summary: Rufus contemplates his place in life.
Note: Based on this beautiful fic I read last night. (And incidentally, you should read that one before this one lest I spoil it for you. It’s not terribly long.) I’m not in the habit of writing stories based on other people’s fanfics, but I had read it late last night and the combination of that and my Rufus muse being loud and pushy led to me dreaming what is written here. Reworked a bit for the sake of coherence, but still fundamentally what I dreamed.

For the record, I have written it in such a way that it is not obviously tied to that other fic, and it is not necessary to read the other for this to make sense. I suggest you do because it’s a wonderful fic, it is the inspiration for this, I do make some reference to its events, and I like to give credit where credit is due.

A little scrap pile

As many know, I've been working on a fanfiction arc recently along a certain version of the FF7 timeline involving a what-if scenario with Reno and Rufus. You might notice that there isn't a real story about the beginning of their relationship. That's because I never finished writing it, and I'm unlikely ever to do so. That said, I'm posting some of the pieces up here, because they are a part of the arc in my mind.

This is not so much a fanfic as a dumping ground for the parts of what was to be a multichapter story from Reno's POV regarding how he and Rufus ended up together. The roots are in “Babysitting,” and most of the rest of the story is in “A Reflection,” but there are a lot of relevant bits from this thing, some of which Rufus didn’t even know to talk about in the reflection. So without further ado, here is a bunch of little ficbits, with running commentary to fill in the context, and just for author commentary, because when I get a venue to ramble about my characters, I really can’t resist.

If you’re looking for something actually resembling a story, I suggest you go read Rufus’ reflection. This here is really a collection of scraps.

Warnings for language and adult concepts.

A Reflection [ FF7, Rufus/Reno]

Title: A Reflection, by Rufus Shinra
Claim: Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each
Themes: 17. Virus, 18. Fever, 55. Logic, 56. Ties, 95. Escape
Wordcount: 3940
Rating: T
Summary: A summation of the entire arc, narrated from Rufus’ point of view
Note: Written because Rufus was demanding his viewpoint on a handful of things I was trying to write, and because I realized that that the refrain of this song is just perfect for his perspective on all of this.

In my life, I've only ever had two lasting illnesses )

Because You're Turks [FFVII}

Title: Because You're Turks
Canon: AC
Characters: Rufus, Turks
Rating: T
Wordcount: 1159
Prompt: Rufus has amnesia -- does Rude try to help, or take shameless advantage of the situation?

Summary: Rufus is confused, and the Turks are concerned.
Note: Of course he tries to help. He's Rude. XP I wrote this largely because I was feeling like writing something stream-of-consciousnessy, and a bit odd psychologically. Amnesia!Rufus suited that end rather nicely. ...Poor guy. For once, I actually really feel sorry for him.

You're a Turk. ...a what? )

Prompt: Cait Sith and Tseng: "Don't give up now."

Title: From the Mouths of Idiots

Wordcount: 498
Rating: T, if only for the occasional cursing
Summary: Elena's thoughts during that bit of the original game where Reno and Rude chatting about who likes who.
Note: Inspired in part by this fic, which is a truly lovely insight into Elena.

Do they not know that I'm listening? )

Don't You Dare Cry [FFVII]

Pass it on

Take 1

The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He's enjoying the wind and the fresh air - until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.
' "My God, this is terrible," the wave says. "Look what's going to happen to me!"
"Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, "Why do you look so sad?"
"The first wave says, "You don't understand We're all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn't it terrible?"
"The second wave says, "No, you don't understand. You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean."
-Tuesdays with Morrie

Take 2

I once met a woman in Kyoto, Japan, who explained to me the concept of goen. Goen means a chance and passing meeting between two people, which nonetheless is meaningful for both. That's what my meeting with this woman was-- I still think about her frequently, and I wonder if she thinks about me.

Because of her, I know there's always something to be learned, even in the most unlikely places.

Take 3

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts." -Mark Twain

Take 4

A young man walked along the seashore at low tide, and found himself surrounded by hundreds upon hundreds of beached starfish. Further down the beach was another man, carefully picking up starfish and tossing them back into the ocean. The young man asked him what he was doing, and he said, "Saving the starfish." Looking around, the young man saw that there were too many starfish to save, and that it was an impossible task for one man. When he said so, the other man replied by bending down, picking up another starfish, and tossing it back into the ocean. He looked at the young man and said, "I made a difference to that one."

Take 5

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined." - Henry David Thoreau

Take 6

If you let a drop of water fall in a pond, it makes ripples. No one can change the world all at once, but everyone can be that water drop. Everyone affects the world around them. I'm sending this to all of you, and all of you can send it on to your friends and family, and they can send it on from there. Maybe you know someone this wouldn't reach, because they don't have a computer, or because they don't know how to read. Maybe that person would appreciate it if you read some of this to them. And maybe then the ripple I've started will travel just that much farther.

Think of a change you want to make in the world, and undertake it step by step, drip by drip. Pretty soon we'll have the whole world thinking.

Title: The Worst...
Timeline: Original game
Characters/Pairings included: Rufus/Reno, Rude, very briefly Elena
Rating: T
Warnings: Vague sexual hinting, but nothing much.
Summary: Bits and pieces of a relationship that was.
Notes: For <a href="http://community.livejournal.com/mako_reactor>mako_reactor claim, Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each. Throwbacks to a couple of no_true_pair prompts: Reno and Elena: O body swayed to music, O brightening glance / How can we know the dancer from the dance,
Rufus and Rude: "Well, I never saw that coming."
Because, you know, they were there.

<lj-cut text="Rufus would have felt much better about the whole thing if there had been kicking and screaming involved."> Dumping Reno was one of the worst mistakes Rufus ever made. He knew it at the time, but he did it anyway, because he had to. Because after so many years of trying to overtake his father, he was finally President. Because he was finally at the top and nobody was allowed to be there with him.

Rufus didn’t think about what happens when you put a block on top of a pile and then take out the one supporting it. Sacrificing friendship and sanity in exchange for power and wider respect--it was a fair trade.

---

The worst part of figuring out what to say was the reasoning for the whole thing. He had referenced his reputation, that Reno’s wasn’t so great, and that his needed to be spotless if he was going to get everybody to respect him as the new president.

In truth, it was that Reno was a weakness. Somehow over all that time, the man had wriggled his way into some small corner of Rufus’ heart. And it was great. It was fantastic, actually, to have somebody to turn to and listen to him in a sense other than taking orders. But it scared the hell out of him, to actually find himself relying on someone else. And if he was going to be the man at the top finally, he could afford no weakness. Was that so terribly selfish?

Not to say he didn’t trust the Turk. He trusted him like he trusted no other human being he had ever come across. And that was exactly why it didn’t work.

---

The words that ended their relationship were not the worst that had passed between them. In fact, they were remarkably cordial, and rather brief. The whole scene took place in Rufus’ office, and ended with Reno calmly walking out the door.

Rufus had expected something more than that. He expected Reno to get angry, to yell at him, to try to change his mind, to kiss him and prove the words a lie, or to curse and kick things. What he got was an “I see” and a door closing with remarkable softness.

The only thing Rufus could think was that Reno must have seen it coming. He wasn’t stupid, and he certainly knew Rufus better than anyone else. He had been prepared for it. And he had set himself up to have the worst possible effect.

Rufus would have felt much better about the whole thing if there had been kicking and screaming involved.

---

The worst moments were the ones that forced the two to acknowledge each other, and those happened on a regular basis. Reno was still himself, and that came with a certain amount of joking and resistance to orders, but when it came down to it, the answer was always “Yes, sir.” Strictly business.

Exactly the way Rufus wanted it, or so he told himself.

---

The worst admonition came from a somewhat unlikely source, a week or so later. Rude stood in Rufus’ office, having finished reporting what he had come to report, but surprisingly not turning to leave. Instead, he was looking at Rufus in a way that was somehow odd--intense, or questioning, or something. Rufus couldn’t actually tell through the sunglasses. But it was odd.

“You can go,” he prompted calmly, and the odd expression broke as the Turk turned to leave. But unexpectedly, he stopped at the door and turned again to face the President.

“Permission to speak frankly?” Rufus raised an eyebrow, curious, and nodded. How unusual for Rude to distinctly make a point of speaking his mind about anything.

“You are a horribly insensitive bastard, and I have no idea what Reno saw in you.” And with that he was gone, and Rufus stared at the closed door in silence.

He probably could have punished the Turk for that somehow, but he let it slide.

---

On second thought, the worst moments were when they weren’t forced to acknowledge each other, and did. There was a particular incident in which they quite literally ran into each other in the hallway. Apparently both of them had been particularly lost in thought, because neither was especially likely to crash into people. And yet.

It was careless, harmless, and quite possibly one of the most torturous moments of Rufus’ life. Because for a very brief moment, it resulted in something akin to an embrace.

“Whoa, sorry,” Reno exclaimed, hand briefly on Rufus’ shoulder to keep balance. “Oh, it’s you,” he observed casually, though his voice held a slight edge of animosity, and he backed off immediately.

“Me, yes,” Rufus replied coldly, “Apologies. For running into you.” So went the words. The thoughts? Something more like I’m lying and I know you know it. I’m not sorry for running into you, and in fact I’m very sorry I didn’t run into you harder because there are many, many reasons I would dearly love to be laying on top of you on the floor right now, and why the hell did you move away so quickly? He ignored the thoughts, and glared. Reno looked back at him quizzically. Could he read his mind?

“No problem,” he muttered, waving a hand dismissively as he turned to leave. “My fault.” Rufus glared daggers into the other man’s back as he walked away. He came very close to commanding the Turk to come back, but really, how would that have looked?

---

Meanwhile, Reno had taken the mention of his mildly promiscuous reputation to heart, and seemed to be trying to make it worse. Rufus had never been one to follow gossip, but sometimes it’s hard to avoid when you’re the type of person who always listens to everything going on around you. It would be wrong to say that Reno had managed to sleep with every employee of the Shinra Electric Company, but boy did it feel like it. Take it a step back to just having been involved somehow, and it ended up pretty close to the truth, as far as Rufus could tell.

It was a particular account of someone having seen Reno dancing with Elena that made Rufus wonder if the Turk was just trying to make him jealous. Surely, that one couldn’t be serious.

---

But the worst part of all of it for Rufus was the time he spent trying to fall asleep that first night. It was not the first time, even recently, that Rufus had slept alone. In fact, he usually did. But for some reason, that night he felt very alone, and his bed felt very, very empty.</lj-cut>

Truly, truly amazing. Things bolded either because they work, or because they really, really don't.

Claimed list: FF7, Shinra people )

Claimed list: Assorted video game characters )

Unclaimed list: FF12 )

I obviously will not get around to writing all of these, but really it's just so much fun to make lists and see what happens. It also occurs to me that Rufus should not have been #1 in both claimed lists (...as he is now losing his memory twice...). But, meh. He would have complained otherwise. XD;

All You Have to Offer [FFVII]

Title: All You Have to Offer
Fandom: FFVII
Claim: Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each
Characters/Pairings included: Just them
Wordcount: 2023
Rating: MA
Warnings: Smut
Summary: Rufus has decided what he wants from Reno.
Spoilers: None.
Notes: This is a direct continuation of Being Watched, so read that one first. I want to give an apology if the flow of this breaks down at any point. I was finding it very difficult to write somehow. Probably because on some level the power dynamics of this relationship are freaking weird. Also, Rufus fails at clothing. ...You'll see.

And I should tell you, Mr. Vice President, if you call me ‘Turk’ again I am going to just go back to the sofa. By myself. )
