Contemplations of Balfran and Yuletide
Basically copy/pasted from LJ, for those of you who keep track of me on both.

I have been musing over Balthier/Fran, given I had a conversation with sarasa_cat about them last night and she always makes me muse over pairings we talk about. So without further ado, I present variations on the concept of Balthier/Fran.

1. Headcanon #1: They are married/practically married/would be a happy couple married, pick your timeline. They clearly understand each other extremely well, so this makes sense to me. (I should note that I'm somewhat biased here because they remind me of Galway and me on some level) I would definitely say that they are zhiren (pronounced jer-ren, approximately), which is a Chinese concept meaning "to know the person." It's the mental/emotional connection the Chinese traditionally place the highest importance on, which is innate understanding of another person. I'm not sure if I'm describing this very well, but there's a quote that comes to mind (I've now forgotten who it belongs to... some Chinese novel character or historical figure) that goes something like, "Knowing that someone has understood me, I can die happy."

2. Headcanon #2, which allows me to pair them with other people without it feeling wrong: zhiren doesn't necessarily imply a romantic relationship. Chinese examples are often between two military officers or whatnot (and one can speculate as much as one wants here, but I doubt all of them were gay ^_~ ). Beyond that, Galway knew a couple of people who he said were a good example of what zhiren looks like without the romantic aspect (as in thy dated, it didn't work out, but they are very close and just know each other extremely well). So in this scenario, very good understanding of each other, very close, but not romantically involved.

3. Potential problem scenario #1: There's romantic interest between them, but Balthier is not wanting to commit. In game, we have Ba'Gamnan calling Balthier a philanderer, some vague whatever-the-hell-that-was going on with Ashe, plus sort of general flirtiness, so I feel like this is the most obvious of potential problems. I see this one leading to occasional sexcapades, nothing too emotionally binding, and possibly Fran being confused by her Hume companion's behavior. This fic by logistika_nyx comes to mind. Not a perfect example of what I was talking about, but it's sort of there and it's beautiful, so I linked it. (In retrospect, it fits better into category #5)

4. Potential problem scenario #2: Age difference. Fran feels like she's doing something wrong by being romantically involved with Balthier. I don't quite see this as a maturity gap, though it could be in some ways, but I could easily see the difference in the way they age being difficult, or Fran feeling guilty for what she perceives as taking advantage of Hume male much younger than herself, or Balthier getting anxiety about "how long has she lived and how many lovers has she had before me?" There are a number of ways this point could cause issues.

5. Potential problem scenario #3: Balthier is not mentally stable enough to maintain a healthy relationship. Therefore, he puts up a performance of always being self-assured and whatnot even in front of Fran and leaves himself to sort of rot behind the wall. Maybe he succeeds in fooling Fran, probably doesn't, but Fran doesn't know how to get through effectively. Balthier would trust Fran with his life, but not his innermost thoughts. I read a fantastic fic a while back that took this one and ran with it. (In fic, Balthier knows exactly what sound each of his guns make, because he has at some point clicked each of them, empty, several times against his head. If someone knows where I can find this one again, I would be highly appreciative). This one sort of depends on how sane you think Balthier is, and relies on a stance of not-zhiren, since that tends to break through such a barrier, but I could see it easily enough. Probably my favorite of the problem scenarios, just because crazy!Balthier is sort of fun.

6. Potential problem scenario #4: This one is a little off the wall comparatively, but I'm on a roll. Balthier, in Fran's eyes, is somewhat of a science project. She's fascinated by Humes so she's found one she gets along with well enough to sort of study long-term. Not to say she doesn't care about him, but there's some level of detachment as she's sort of watching their interactions though a lens of "hmm, that was interesting." Leads to Fran toying with him a bit just to see what will happen. I could also see this going the other direction, with Balthier kicking himself for having picked up his father's scientific impulses, but compelled to study nonetheless.

7. Potential problem scenario #5: It's a relationship based on convenience and driven by adrenaline, so if either decides he/she doesn't want to be a sky pirate anymore, it all falls apart. I feel like this doesn't have too much potential, since I think it would either be a lasting enough relationship to get through that or fall apart for different reasons, but worth mentioning.

If anyone thinks I've missed something in that, do tell. I'm having fun with this.

I am also horribly addicted to fic challenges, and while scanning through the Yuletide New Year Resoutions request list sort of scared myself with the number of things I looked at and thought would be interesting to write.

Who wouldn't love the Haibane? Kuu, Nemu, Rakka and Kanna are my favourites but really, I love pretty much everyone in this story. I'd love to hear more about what makes the Haibane's life special. Maybe there are more traditions like the one for the New Year and you know just the one you could write about. Maybe there are stories that one of them likes to tell the others that reflect their life or that happened to them. Maybe someone helps someone else (and themselves?) in an unexpected way. For this fandom I'd love a fic that isn't too dark. It can be somewhat dark as long as the Haibane's optimism still shines through as it's one of my favourite parts of the series: Hope can always be found even if the road to it isn't as bright as one would like. I like the Haibane as friends but if you have a pairing you especially like, feel free to include it as long as it isn't the sole focus of the fic. Nothing too explicit please (hints are fine).

It's just that the few fics I've seen for this fandom are mostly about him). A fic giving pre-manga backstory would be neat as would a fic that fills in the gaps at the end of the manga. The whole skipping over the actual world saving frustrated me. Another possibility is something about how Bambi adapted to the changes in her life after she left home. It would be fantastic to get something about her character, in the world of the movie-within-the-movie (see my Santa letter for more detail if you like - don't worry if your opinion is totally different, I'm just as interested in reading different perspectives on her!), and it'd be lovely if it included Gene's character's character also, however you like, present in the story or just in a memory or thought(s), etc. Backstory, between the times they met, afterward, might-have-beens, all of the above, anything is cool. If this totally isn't working for you, that's cool too - I'd prefer something -not- centered around Don/Kathy (though feisty Kathy is fun in reasonable doses) or Don/Cosmo (if kept light, some is fine), but otherwise, go to town.

Sara is always rebuffing Ian and Ian is always chasing after Sara. I'd like to see a story where their positions are reversed. Would like it if Ian at least refused Sara's advances once, but I leave the decision of whether they actually get together up to you.

If there's anything on there you would especially like to see me attempt, do let me know, since I have yet to decide whether I actually want to do any of them. First listing under The Princess Bride really should not be as tempting as it is. Mulan just might be a win. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood really desperately wants to be a win except I don't remember those characters hardly at all. Maybe if I happen to have some old tapes laying around. All the President's Men is there not because I was especially tempted but because of oh so many jokes in my 11th grade government class. I find the number of requests on there for historical real people slash disturbing.

...some of these involve watching/reading things I own but haven't had time for yet. *shakes head* I am tempted by fanfic I cannot yet mentally plot. How sad is that?
