Don't You Dare Cry [FFVII]

I felt like Tseng and Elena both needed a bit of attention from me. Thus, fluff was born.

Title: The Worst...
Timeline: Original game
Characters/Pairings included: Rufus/Reno, Rude, very briefly Elena
Rating: T
Warnings: Vague sexual hinting, but nothing much.
Summary: Bits and pieces of a relationship that was.
Notes: For <a href="http://community.livejournal.com/mako_reactor>mako_reactor claim, Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each. Throwbacks to a couple of no_true_pair prompts: Reno and Elena: O body swayed to music, O brightening glance / How can we know the dancer from the dance,
Rufus and Rude: "Well, I never saw that coming."
Because, you know, they were there.

<lj-cut text="Rufus would have felt much better about the whole thing if there had been kicking and screaming involved."> Dumping Reno was one of the worst mistakes Rufus ever made. He knew it at the time, but he did it anyway, because he had to. Because after so many years of trying to overtake his father, he was finally President. Because he was finally at the top and nobody was allowed to be there with him.

Rufus didn’t think about what happens when you put a block on top of a pile and then take out the one supporting it. Sacrificing friendship and sanity in exchange for power and wider respect--it was a fair trade.

---

The worst part of figuring out what to say was the reasoning for the whole thing. He had referenced his reputation, that Reno’s wasn’t so great, and that his needed to be spotless if he was going to get everybody to respect him as the new president.

In truth, it was that Reno was a weakness. Somehow over all that time, the man had wriggled his way into some small corner of Rufus’ heart. And it was great. It was fantastic, actually, to have somebody to turn to and listen to him in a sense other than taking orders. But it scared the hell out of him, to actually find himself relying on someone else. And if he was going to be the man at the top finally, he could afford no weakness. Was that so terribly selfish?

Not to say he didn’t trust the Turk. He trusted him like he trusted no other human being he had ever come across. And that was exactly why it didn’t work.

---

The words that ended their relationship were not the worst that had passed between them. In fact, they were remarkably cordial, and rather brief. The whole scene took place in Rufus’ office, and ended with Reno calmly walking out the door.

Rufus had expected something more than that. He expected Reno to get angry, to yell at him, to try to change his mind, to kiss him and prove the words a lie, or to curse and kick things. What he got was an “I see” and a door closing with remarkable softness.

The only thing Rufus could think was that Reno must have seen it coming. He wasn’t stupid, and he certainly knew Rufus better than anyone else. He had been prepared for it. And he had set himself up to have the worst possible effect.

Rufus would have felt much better about the whole thing if there had been kicking and screaming involved.

---

The worst moments were the ones that forced the two to acknowledge each other, and those happened on a regular basis. Reno was still himself, and that came with a certain amount of joking and resistance to orders, but when it came down to it, the answer was always “Yes, sir.” Strictly business.

Exactly the way Rufus wanted it, or so he told himself.

---

The worst admonition came from a somewhat unlikely source, a week or so later. Rude stood in Rufus’ office, having finished reporting what he had come to report, but surprisingly not turning to leave. Instead, he was looking at Rufus in a way that was somehow odd--intense, or questioning, or something. Rufus couldn’t actually tell through the sunglasses. But it was odd.

“You can go,” he prompted calmly, and the odd expression broke as the Turk turned to leave. But unexpectedly, he stopped at the door and turned again to face the President.

“Permission to speak frankly?” Rufus raised an eyebrow, curious, and nodded. How unusual for Rude to distinctly make a point of speaking his mind about anything.

“You are a horribly insensitive bastard, and I have no idea what Reno saw in you.” And with that he was gone, and Rufus stared at the closed door in silence.

He probably could have punished the Turk for that somehow, but he let it slide.

---

On second thought, the worst moments were when they weren’t forced to acknowledge each other, and did. There was a particular incident in which they quite literally ran into each other in the hallway. Apparently both of them had been particularly lost in thought, because neither was especially likely to crash into people. And yet.

It was careless, harmless, and quite possibly one of the most torturous moments of Rufus’ life. Because for a very brief moment, it resulted in something akin to an embrace.

“Whoa, sorry,” Reno exclaimed, hand briefly on Rufus’ shoulder to keep balance. “Oh, it’s you,” he observed casually, though his voice held a slight edge of animosity, and he backed off immediately.

“Me, yes,” Rufus replied coldly, “Apologies. For running into you.” So went the words. The thoughts? Something more like I’m lying and I know you know it. I’m not sorry for running into you, and in fact I’m very sorry I didn’t run into you harder because there are many, many reasons I would dearly love to be laying on top of you on the floor right now, and why the hell did you move away so quickly? He ignored the thoughts, and glared. Reno looked back at him quizzically. Could he read his mind?

“No problem,” he muttered, waving a hand dismissively as he turned to leave. “My fault.” Rufus glared daggers into the other man’s back as he walked away. He came very close to commanding the Turk to come back, but really, how would that have looked?

---

Meanwhile, Reno had taken the mention of his mildly promiscuous reputation to heart, and seemed to be trying to make it worse. Rufus had never been one to follow gossip, but sometimes it’s hard to avoid when you’re the type of person who always listens to everything going on around you. It would be wrong to say that Reno had managed to sleep with every employee of the Shinra Electric Company, but boy did it feel like it. Take it a step back to just having been involved somehow, and it ended up pretty close to the truth, as far as Rufus could tell.

It was a particular account of someone having seen Reno dancing with Elena that made Rufus wonder if the Turk was just trying to make him jealous. Surely, that one couldn’t be serious.

---

But the worst part of all of it for Rufus was the time he spent trying to fall asleep that first night. It was not the first time, even recently, that Rufus had slept alone. In fact, he usually did. But for some reason, that night he felt very alone, and his bed felt very, very empty.</lj-cut>

All You Have to Offer [FFVII]

Title: All You Have to Offer
Fandom: FFVII
Claim: Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each
Characters/Pairings included: Just them
Wordcount: 2023
Rating: MA
Warnings: Smut
Summary: Rufus has decided what he wants from Reno.
Spoilers: None.
Notes: This is a direct continuation of Being Watched, so read that one first. I want to give an apology if the flow of this breaks down at any point. I was finding it very difficult to write somehow. Probably because on some level the power dynamics of this relationship are freaking weird. Also, Rufus fails at clothing. ...You'll see.

And I should tell you, Mr. Vice President, if you call me ‘Turk’ again I am going to just go back to the sofa. By myself. )

An Encounter with a Wild Beast [FFVII]

Title: An Encounter with a Wild Beast
Fandom: FFVII
Claim: Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each
Wordcount: 1088
Characters/Pairings included: Dark Nation, unnamed attendant
Rating: T to be safe
Warnings: None.
Summary: Silly, just for fun. Could alternately be called Reno's Very Bad Morning.
Spoilers: None.

It was right about then that something landed ominously at the foot of the bed. )

Babysitting [FFVII]

Title: Babysitting
Canon: FFVII: Before Crisis
Challenge: Rufus/Reno, fics in an arc, 1000+ words each
Characters: Them.
Wordcount: 2755
Rating: T to be safe, probably more like K+
Warnings: None
Summary: Reno has the job of keeping an eye on Rufus. Neither are happy about this.
Spoilers: If you're not familiar with BC canon.
Note: This only counts as including a pairing because it's part of a continuity. The farthest they get in this is not entirely hating each other. And that's even iffy. But! It is part of the same arc, and thus I say it counts. The seeds of later relationship are here somewhere, but have a while yet before they take root. Meanwhile, the snarking is a lot of fun.

Here Reno was, sitting in a room most people didn't know existed with a boy most people didn't know was there, babysitting. )

Reno can Remember [FFVII]

Title: Reno can Remember
Fandom: FFVII
Characters: Mostly Reno, briefly Rude, a lot of thoughts on Rufus, and brief mentions of Cloud’s group, and a random Shinra employee.
Wordcount: 1038
Rating: T
Warnings: Death? (except, you know, not really, because I’ve written later fics in this arc and Advent Children exists?)
Summary: Reno had a tough couple of days once he heard the news about Rufus...
Note: This is part of the ongoing saga of Reno and Rufus. I imagine that the flow of this is highly disjointed. If it is, I have succeeded in doing what I was trying to do with it.

Reno can remember the day he gave up on his job. )

Beer is Not Enough [FFVII]

For [info]kinkfest, due the 19th.

I feel like this ended up being oddly adorable.

Title: Beer is Not Enough
Fandom: FFVII
Characters: Rude, Reno, mentions of Rufus
Wordcount: 1,045
Rating: T (a lot of alcohol, and scattered cussing)
Prompt: Final Fantasy VII – Rude/Reno – barhopping – He was like, the God of Beer!
Notes: Part of my ongoing saga of Reno and Rufus, with this being more friendship than anything else. That said, it does focus on Reno and Rude, and involves snuggling.

Given the circumstances, Rude would have expected Reno to go for something that would get him very drunk very quickly, but he seemed to be sticking with beer. On the other hand, he was making the most valiant attempt Rude had ever seen to get drunk quickly off of the stuff. )

In the Moonlight [FFXII]

For [info]kinkfest, due the 11th.

Title: In the Moonlight
Fandom: FFXII
Pairing: Balthier/Fran
Wordcount: 100 (drabble!)
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: Final Fantasy XII - Fran/Balthier - skin - Under the moonlight, it almost seems unreal.

There is something about the moonlight that makes all places seem private. )

Ivory and Gold [FFVII]

For [info]kinkfest, due the 11th. I was going to make this a double drabble since it almost seems like cheating to write a 100 word fic that includes the prompt word for word, but I wasn't sure what else to write, checked the wordcount, and it happened to be 100. So it stays.

Title: Ivory and Gold
Fandom: FFVII
Pairing: Rufus/Tseng
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 100 (drabble!)
Prompt: Final Fantasy VII - Tseng/Rufus - kiss - The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. The curves of your lips rewrite history
Note: It must be lonely at the top...

Ivory and Gold )

Painting [FFXII]

For [info]kinkfest, due tomorrow.

Title: Painting
Fandom: Final Fantasy XII
Characters: Basch, Vossler
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 189
Prompt: Final Fantasy XII - Vossler/Basch - body paint - “ I never knew you were an artist”
Note: For me to look at the prompt and come up with this... I swear something in my mind is just wired wrong.

Vossler’s fingers left trails, warmth of flesh turning to cool and wet of paint... )

The Man in the Mirror [FFVII: Rufus]

For [info]kinkfest, due the 9th.

Title: The Man in the Mirror
Fandom: FFVII
Character(s): Rufus (and his reflection?)
Wordcount: 100 (Actually a drabble! For once.)
Rating: PG
Prompt: Final Fantasy VII - Rufus - vanity - You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte.
Note: I don’t think this precisely fits the prompt. But it was what my mind wanted to do with it.

The man in the mirror is dressed in white )

It's the Thought that Counts [Loveless]

For [info]kinkfest, but I highly doubt this is what the prompter intended.

Title: It's the Thought that Counts
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 595
Prompt: Loveless - Youji/Natsuo/Ritsuka - dirty talk - "lessons in topping"
Note: Blame my twisted sense of humor.

It's the Thought that Counts )

An Unexpected Visit [Rufus/Reno]

For [info]kinkfest, though not due until the 10th. This started as a tentative claim on my part, and somehow became monolithic. At over 3000 words, this piece is done, and related pieces want to be written.

Hopefully there aren't any typos or anything in here. I didn't proof it too closely. Title also wanted to involve coffee somehow, but I couldn't come up with anything I liked. I have no idea how coffee ended up turning into a recurring theme, anyway. XD;

Title: An Unexpected Visit
Fandom: FFVII
Pairing: Rufus/Reno
Rating: T
Wordcount: 3,561
Timeline: Shortly after the end of the original game.
Prompt: Final Fantasy VII - Rufus/Reno - reminiscing - You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive. Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave. But you gave away the things you loved, and one of them was me.
Note: I want to thank whoever put up this prompt. I took it tentatively, and ended up with a new OTP. I guess my next challenge is to write them in a situation that doesn’t make both of them act a bit odd. Haha.

All I'm saying, Mr. President, is that if you're looking for a place to stay, you might be out of luck. I only have one bed here and I'm not too anxious for you to be in it. )

[Lost Odyssey] Midnight After

Title: Midnight After
Fandom: Lost Odyssey
Pairing: Actually gen, but with Jansen/Ming in mind
Wordcount: 1590
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost Odyssey, its characters, nor the highly amusing scene that spawned this fanfic.
Summary: An extension of the scene in which Jansen convinces Ming that trying a alcoholic drink is a good idea, and Ming responds by doing so and passing out. Not my best writing, but I suspect writing from Ming's perspective is difficult anyway. I think it came out cute, regardless.
